Free Transport for senior citizens and vulnerable persons

Diffferent generations in our towns and villages have different needs, but more so in the case of senior citizens and vulnerable persons. Active Ageing and an independent life are the inspiration of a free transport service to senior citizens and vulnerable persons by the Local Councils. It offers these residents the opportunity to be more mobile in their daily chores.

The provision of a free transport service to senior citizens and vulnerable persons ensures they remain within their communities while giving family members and carers a welcome respite. Your free transport appointment can be obtained by a simple phone call to your Local Council.

Free transport services in our towns and villages are backed by various funding schemes that also cater for the purchase of the appropriate vehicles.

There have been several initiatives in this sector, among them a LESA donation to the Southern Regional Council for the purchase of an electric van to be used for community purposes by the twelve Local Councils in the region. Paola senior citizens and vulnerable persons had earlier been provided with free transport on a ramp-equipped electric van thanks to Norwegian and Local Council funds. Assistance in the purchase of electric cars and vans has also been given to the Ħal lija, Ħamrun, and Kalkara Local Councils, among others.

It is the right of every senior citizen and vulnerable person to lead an independent life within the community where he or she was born and grew up among family, friends and neighbours. It fosters a better quality of life and sustainable living to these residents.
