History

The Council is twinned with Tarquinia, Italy and agreement was signed on 17th March 2002

The Area of Tarquinia covers 28.000 hectors of land and stretches from Tuscany, through the inland country of Viterbo all the way to the Tyrrhenean coast. Her strategic geographical location, only 90 Km from Rome, make Tarquinia an important junction between the north and the south of Italy. The vicinity of the port of Civitavecchia and of the Fiumicino Airport make Tarquinia easily accessible from the major European Cities.

Tarquinia, the city of the Etruscan, Medieval, Renaissance, and Neoclassical art, dominates the panorama from a high hill (133 m) with her overpowering defense walls and square hovering towers. Every single street in the historical centre has something special: the Medieval squares, the numerous towers reaching to the sky in most unexpected places, the Romanesque churches and spires, the symbols of the spiritual and physical defense of the people, and finally the numerous gardens, the real oases of peace. In the incontaminate county of the mysterious and intriguing Maremma one finds a perfectly balanced quality of life.
