Howard Gardens
Fronting
Mdina there is Howard Gardens, which runs along the landward fortifications.
This Garden was named after the first Prime Minister of Malta, Sir Joseph
Howard. The main part of the garden skirts the line of the ditch of Mdina and
it is the most spacious. There are two monuments within this section, and one
of them is commemorating Dr Paul Xuereb, a politician and for some time, an
Agent President of Malta. This is the work of the local sculptor, Anton Agius.
Towards the end of the garden, facing Mtarfa, one can look over the
archaeological remains Melite, the Roman city. In another section of the garden
there is a medieval column surmounted by a capital and a cross. It is believed
that this indicates the location of the previous Augustinian church.
